These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the RoommateU mobile app operated by RoommateU. This is Version 1 product copy and should be reviewed by a lawyer before public launch. It is not legal advice.
Acceptance of terms
By creating an account or using RoommateU, you agree to these Terms, our Privacy Policy, and our Community Guidelines.
If you do not agree, do not use the app.
Eligibility
You must be at least 17 years old to use RoommateU.
Version 1 is intended for San Diego State University students. You are expected to register with a valid @sdsu.edu email address. Email confirmation may be required before full access.
RoommateU is an independent service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by San Diego State University.
Your account and accurate information
You are responsible for maintaining the security of your login credentials.
You agree to provide accurate profile and housing information and to keep it reasonably up to date.
You may not create an account for someone else or share your account.
What RoommateU provides
RoommateU helps students discover potential roommates, view compatibility scores, match with mutual interest, and message matched users.
RoommateU does not verify leases, landlords, housing conditions, roommate claims, or the accuracy of user-submitted information.
You are solely responsible for evaluating housing options, meeting people safely, and making lease or roommate decisions.
Prohibited conduct
You agree not to:
- Harass, threaten, bully, or discriminate against others
- Post sexual exploitation, hate speech, or illegal content
- Impersonate another person or create fake profiles
- Run scams, spam, phishing, or unauthorized commercial solicitation
- Share another person's private information without permission
- Use the service if you are under 17
- Attempt to bypass security, scrape data, or interfere with the service
- Use RoommateU for any unlawful purpose
User-generated content
You retain ownership of content you submit (photos, bio, messages, etc.).
You grant RoommateU a limited, non-exclusive license to host, display, and process your content solely to operate and improve the service (for example, showing your profile to other students or delivering messages to matches).
We may remove content or suspend accounts that violate these Terms or our Community Guidelines.
Safety tools
RoommateU provides report and block features. Reports are reviewed manually in Version 1.
Blocking affects what you see in the app but does not delete historical database records such as past messages.
RoommateU is not an emergency service. Contact local authorities for immediate danger.
Account deletion
You may delete your account at any time in Settings → Legal & safety → Delete account. Deletion is permanent, ends your access to RoommateU, and cannot be undone.
When you delete your account, we remove or anonymize personal profile data, lifestyle answers, profile photos, push notification data, swipes, and blocks involving your account as described in our Privacy Policy.
Some historical messages, inactive match records, and safety or moderation records may be retained in anonymized or minimized form as described in the Privacy Policy.
Service availability
RoommateU is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis. Features may change, break, or be discontinued without notice during Version 1.
We do not guarantee uninterrupted access, error-free operation, or that you will find a roommate.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, RoommateU and its operators will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service.
Our total liability for any claim related to the service is limited to the greater of (a) amounts you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or (b) one hundred U.S. dollars ($100). Version 1 has no paid features, so this typically means $100 unless applicable law requires otherwise.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations; in those cases, limitations apply to the maximum extent permitted by law.
This section is placeholder language and must be reviewed by qualified legal counsel before launch.
Suspension and termination
We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms, our Community Guidelines, or if we reasonably believe your account poses a safety or legal risk.
You may stop using RoommateU at any time and may delete your account in Settings.
Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. We will update the effective date when we do. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated Terms.
