This Privacy Policy describes how RoommateU ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, retains, and deletes information when you use the RoommateU mobile app.
Information we collect
When you use RoommateU, we may collect:
- Account email address and authentication credentials
- Name (first and last)
- Age or birth date (used to display age on your profile)
- University affiliation (San Diego State University for Version 1)
- Major and class standing
- Gender information, if you choose to provide it
- Profile photos you upload
- Biography and interests
- Housing preferences such as budget, preferred move-in date, and housing style
- Lifestyle questionnaire answers used for compatibility scoring
- Swipe decisions and matches
- Messages you send in one-on-one chats with matched users
- Pre-match message requests (introductions) you choose to send after liking another profile, including the request text and status metadata needed to operate that feature (for example, pending, accepted, or declined)
- Safety-related records such as reports you submit and users you block
- Push notification registration data, if you enable push notifications
- Device and session information needed to operate the app (for example, authentication tokens stored locally to keep you signed in)
- Relative activity status shown to authorized viewers when you use the app (for example, "Active now" on matches)
Information we do not collect (Version 1)
RoommateU Version 1 does not sell your data, show advertising, or process payments.
The app does not use GPS or continuous location tracking.
How we use information
We use collected information to:
- Authenticate your account and maintain your session
- Create and display your profile
- Calculate compatibility scores and show Discover candidates
- Enable matching, deliver controlled pre-match message requests after a like, and support one-on-one messaging between matched users
- Operate report and block safety features
- Send push notifications you opt into, such as new match or message alerts
- Troubleshoot issues, maintain security, and improve reliability
Compatibility and questionnaire responses
Your lifestyle questionnaire answers are used to calculate compatibility scores and to show authorized comparisons that explain why you and another user may be a good roommate match.
Questionnaire answers are not public. They are displayed only through intended RoommateU experiences—for example, compatibility scores on profiles and detailed compatibility breakdowns when you are authorized to view another user—not as a searchable public listing.
Service providers
We use third-party infrastructure to operate RoommateU, including:
- Supabase — authentication, PostgreSQL database, file storage for profile photos, and realtime messaging infrastructure
- Expo and related mobile tooling — app build, delivery, and standard platform services where applicable
How providers use data
These providers process data on our behalf to run the service. We do not authorize them to use your information for their own marketing purposes.
When you delete your account, we remove or anonymize your information in RoommateU and delete associated stored content, such as profile photo files, through our service providers as part of that process. Provider systems and backups may retain data for a limited period according to their own policies.
We do not sell your data
We do not sell your personal information. We do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
Your choices
You can edit much of your profile information in the app.
You can block other users and submit safety reports from profile and chat menus.
You can delete your account at any time in Settings → Legal & safety → Delete account. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. See "Data retention" and "Account deletion" below for what is removed, anonymized, or retained.
Please do not upload highly sensitive information (for example, government ID numbers, financial account details, or medical records) in messages or profile fields.
Data retention
We retain personal information only as long as reasonably necessary to provide RoommateU, maintain security, investigate abuse, comply with legal obligations, and resolve disputes.
While your account is active, we keep the account and profile data needed to operate the service. When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize data as described in the Account deletion section below.
Account deletion
You can delete your RoommateU account directly in the app: Settings → Legal & safety → Delete account. You will be asked to confirm before deletion begins. After deletion completes, you are signed out and can no longer access the account.
Account deletion is permanent. You will not be able to sign in again with the same credentials, and your profile will no longer appear in Discover or be available for new matches or messages.
When you delete your account, we permanently remove the following from RoommateU:
- Identifying profile information (such as your name, bio, major, class standing, housing preferences, interests, and related profile fields)
- Your lifestyle and roommate compatibility questionnaire answers
- Profile photo metadata and the uploaded photo files stored for your account
- Push notification registration data and server-stored push notification preferences, so deleted accounts no longer receive RoommateU push notifications
- Swipe records involving your account
- Block relationships involving your account
Anonymized and retained data after deletion
Some information may remain in anonymized or minimized form after account deletion:
- Historical messages and conversation records with matched users may remain visible to the other participant, but your identifying profile information is removed or replaced with a generic deleted-account label. The deleted account cannot be accessed, matched with, or messaged.
- Match and conversation records may remain in inactive form for the other participant's history.
- Safety and moderation records, including reports submitted by or about your account, may be retained for abuse prevention, moderation review, dispute handling, and similar safety purposes for as long as reasonably necessary for those purposes.
- A minimal internal account record may remain so retained messages and reports can reference a non-identifying deleted-account placeholder rather than your original profile details.
Access after deletion
After you delete your account, login access ends and you are signed out of the app. Your account is no longer available for normal RoommateU use. We disable sign-in for deleted accounts and anonymize the email address associated with the account so it can no longer be used to identify you in the app.
Security
We use industry-standard practices through our service providers, including access controls and encrypted connections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure.
Age requirement
RoommateU is intended for users who are at least 17 years old and eligible San Diego State University students. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 17.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will update the effective date when we do. Continued use after changes means you acknowledge the updated policy.
